Eddy Merckx

The 1971 World Road Race Championship was held in Mendrisio, Switzerland. The race presented 268.8 km over 16 laps of a 16.8 km circuit.

Eddy Merckx (Bel) and Felice Gimondi (Ita) rode away from a 6 rider breakaway group and came into Mendrisio to contest the sprint. Merckx led out the sprint and held off Gimondi for the victory. Cyrille Guimard (Fra) won the sprint for third place.
